Recognising & Managing Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) in Teens

Secondary Traumatic Stress: The Silent Epidemic

Secondary traumatic stress (STS) is a growing yet often overlooked concern among young people. It occurs when individuals indirectly experience a traumatic event through firsthand accounts or media coverage. It could be a friend or even a fellow student in another school who attempted suicide or was bullied. When students talk about the situation amongst themselves without adequate guidance, STS can occur.

  • What are good (and bad) ways of managing STS?
  • How can youths increase their resilience?
